So, Red Bull and Force India will apparently vote against the halo after testing at Silverstone. Since rule changes for the next year require an unanimous vote, this means we won’t see it before 2018.

Good! Hopefully they can come up with something alittle more appealing on the eye.

I don’t really get why some teams want the flipflop-thingy instead of a windscreen like Redbull suggested. Or even better: a full dome!

From what I’ve read, most teams see it as a quick-and-dirty placeholder until another, better concept (like the windscreen) matures. The current Red Bull proposal failed crash testing and encounters reservations regarding cockpit ventilation and driver extraction.

That, and any variance in the angle of the screen itself would result in failure. Bummer.

Yeah, I get extractions is more dificult, though putting a bit of thought into that could probably solve it. Cooling is a bit nonsense, since they could increase the portion of air from the s-duct that flows into the cabin.

Of course, but then you’re diverting aero enhancing flow for driver comfort. Can’t you hear all those engineers crying out for the lost milliseconds per lap?

Good. Let's hope it gets delayed permanently.

Those engineers get paid a lot of money for that millisecond.

And they sure deliver; the technical innovation and skirting of the rules is one of the reasons why I love following F1. I’m not really won over by (the perceived need for) cockpit protection, but I can’t wait to see what the aerodynamicists will do with it.

I wonder about the need also. Two high-profile incidents in the same year (Massa and Surtees) have to be a statistical anomaly (like the time the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds both lost a plane on the same day). Is there enough data to say that this is a necessity? It certainly wouldn’t have helped Bianchi. I just wonder if this is a solution in search of a real problem.

It’s a debate (if you can even call it a debate) that’s been led by emotion and the FIA’s quest for (the semblance of) safety. Though to be honest, I’m not sure a decent statistical analysis is/was viable, with so few relevant accidents happening these days.
Massa’s accident probably wouldn’t have been prevented by the flip flop either.

Well Seb said it obstructed his view too much.
